Danish containership giant and terminals group AP Moller-Maersk is continuing its transformation by putting technology at the heart of its management team.

The company said on Tuesday that chief technology and information officer Navneet Kapoor is joining the executive board on 1 April.

Kapoor, 50, has been with the group since 2017.

"The appointment is both a recognition of the role technology plays for the transformation of AP Moller–Maersk, and the strategic leadership capabilities of Navneet Kapoor," Maersk said.

Kapoor is leading efforts to build a competitive advantage from technology, which is a central element in the company's strategy.

Maersk is in the middle of a "multi-dimensional" digital shake-up that aims to offer a new digital products platform to clients.

Mission-critical

"Technology today is mission-critical for AP Moller-Maersk and for our transformation," said group chief executive Soren Skou.

"To succeed, we are investing in modern technology platforms with end-to-end standardised core processes. Navneet Kapoor has done an excellent job in accelerating this agenda since he took on the position as CTIO last year and brings unique and critical perspectives to our business transformation."

The appointment brings the board to six, including Skou and chief financial officer Patrick Jany.

The other members are Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of fleet and strategic brands; Vincent Clerc, CEO of ocean and logistics; and Morten Engelstoft, CEO of APM Terminals.

Five years of reorganisation

Chairman Jim Hagemann Snabe said the group has turned an important corner in its reorganisation, which started in 2016, to create an integrated logistics company with growth and more stable profitability.

"Navneet Kapoor joining the executive board is a recognition of the importance and impact of technology and of his personal capabilities," he added.

Kapoor has previously been head of global shared service centres at Maersk and became CTIO in February last year.

Before joining the Danish liner operator, he was senior vice president of technology at Target Corp, and has also worked for General Electric.

The executive has a PhD in chemical engineering and a master's in electrical engineering.
