Matson says it is on schedule for compliance with the coming IMO 2020 emissions regulations.
The New York-traded Hawaiian boxship owner said Monday that three of the six ships in its China-Long Beach Express service will be outfitted with scrubbers this year and the other three next year.
"Because of unpredictability in the way fuel markets may develop over the next few years, Matson's IMO compliance strategy retains the flexibility to implement the most economical solution as conditions evolve," said senior vice president John Lauer in a statement.
The company already has scrubbers in use in its Alaska service and several newbuildings have the ability to use LNG in addition to low-sulphur fuel.
The IMO 2020 regulations cap sulphur content in marine fuel at 0.5%, down from 3.5%.
The company did not disclose how much it was paying for the scrubbers, but in the fall it said scrubber for two of its ships in the China-Long Beach Express service cost $9m each.
The three ships in the Alaska service had scrubbers installed for a total of $27.7m.
