An Ocean Network Express (ONE) containership that lost more than 1,800 containers on a transpacific voyage last November has finally departed Kobe.

The 14,052-teu containership ONE Apus (built 2019) has spent the past three months in the Japanese port discharging damaged containers.

ONE said in a customer advisory that the ship is estimated to arrive at Long Beach on or around 30 March 2021.

However, the giant containership faces further delays on her arrival on the US west coast due to port congestion, and is not expected to berth until 7 April 2021.

ONE said the general plan was to back-load as many original sound and transloaded containers on the ONE Apus as reasonably possible.

However, it said some containers originally carried on the vessel needed to be carried on different vessels due to safety and/or operational constraints, or where the required documentation could not be completed in time for the vessel’s departure from Kobe.

The incident involving the ONE Apus was one of the largest losses of containers in recent years and is one of a series of such losses on the transpacific in recent months.

In an update last month, specialist claims consultancy WK Webster said investigations into the possible cause of the incident have been continuing.

“The experts that we have appointed have been reviewing weather reports, voyage data, ship design, damage patterns as well as similar incidents where there may be certain common factors that have contributed to the cause of the incident,” the company said.
