Shipping veteran John Freydag is leaving the Schulte Group after 28 years to take up a new position on the shipping desk of MPC Capital.

Freydag, who is managing director for Bernhard Schulte's container and bulker chartering activities, confirms he is leaving at the end of the year.

He will take up a new position as chief commercial officer of MPC Maritime Holding early in 2019.

Responsibilities will include overseeing MPC’s growing shipbroking operation Contchart.

Freydag says he is parting on good terms with the Schulte family, headed by patriarch Heinrich Schulte, for whom he has worked since joining as a chartering assistant in 1991.

He worked his way up to become managing director for container & bulk chartering in 2012.

Since 2013, he has also been managing director and board member of Hanseatic Unity Chartering, the chartering platform formed by Schulte, Reederei Nord, Borealis Maritime, Asiatic Lloyd and Leonhard & Blumberg.

MPC’s fast growing Hamburg-based container shipping operation, headed by Constantin Baack, has a track record in luring top executive from rival firms.

A year ago, it recruited Christian Rychly, who joined MPC after a 19-year stint with Leonhard & Blumberg.

Freydag is expected to work alongside Rychly, who runs the shipping operation at MPC together with Michael Silies, chief executive of MPC Capital-controlled Ahrenkiel Steamship.
