Arne Blystad's Songa Container has offloaded two more boxships for a staggering profit in record markets.

The Oslo-listed company said the 2,564-teu City of Hongkong (built 2009) and the 3,534-teu Songa Haydn (built 2010) have gone for a combined $58m.

The ships are being delivered at the end of their current charter commitments in the second and third quarters of 2021.

Songa Container has not named the buyer.

Profit from the deals is $39m. Songa bought the City of Hongkong was bought from Reederei Lauterjung under a purchase option in December for $10.5m and the company bought the Songa Haydn from Hansa Treuhand of Germany in 2017 for $8.5m.

VesselsValue, a valuation platform, estimates the Songa Haydn is worth $32.6m the City of Hongkong is worth $22.4m.

Songa had an option to buy the Lauterjung ship back as part of an en-bloc sale of three ships to the German owner in April 2018.

Ships coming off charter

Chief executive James Buck said earlier in May that Songa was looking to benefit from five ships coming off charter in the next few months "in the hottest container market of all time".

Sources said that Songa Haydn was due to come open in June. The vessel has been earning $8,350 per day over a year, while three-year charters for similar ships are now pegged at $34,000.

The shipowner flipped its first quarter results into the black as it banked asset sale profits.

The Norwegian company, which now has a fleet of 12 boxships, reported a pre-tax profit of $19.1m, up from an $8.5m loss in the same period of last year.

Much of the profit came from the sale of the 4,957-teu Songa Toscana (built 2013), which went to TS Lines for $42.3m in February. Blystad booked a gain of $19.1m from the deal.

In March, Blystad's private shipping interests picked up the 2,846-teu Robin 1 (ex-Algarroba, built 2009) for about $9m less than it is estimated to be worth today.

The price was around $15m, but the ship is thought to be worth $24m now, according to VesselsValue.
