Two passengers have been seriously injured when a German-managed ropax grounded on rocks in Ibiza.

The accident involving the 992-gt San Gwann (built 2001) happened on Saturday evening off Ibiza, the Spanish Coast Guard said in a statement.

At least 25 people were injured. Two, including a 10-year-old boy, suffered serious injury and were airlifted by helicopter to hospital. The rest were evacuated by boat.

German shipping company FRS, which manages the vessel between Ibiza and Formentera, said the ship left Ibiza at 2100 GMT on Saturday.

It ran aground on the islet of Es Malvins while carrying 35 passengers and 12 staff members.

FRS said it activated its security and emergency protocols and immediately informed the authorities of the incident.

"After the impact the crew helped the passengers until they were all evacuated," FRS added.

"FRS would like to thank Spanish coastguards who were involved in the rescue operation and the evacuation of the vessel, as well as the other institutions who have participated in the evacuation."

Service suspended

FRS has suspended the ferry service, saying its "priority is the passengers and crew".

The regional president of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, said the injured were all "receiving the necessary medical attention" in a message on Twitter.

The ferry was still stuck on the rocks on Sunday, but has since been refloated and brought into Ibiza City.

No cause has been given for the accident.

The San Gwann has no port state control detentions on record.
