German owner Oldendorff Carriers will be fitting a new performance monitoring system on all its ships.

The company said UK-based Datum Electronics has been awarded a fleet contract for its Datum Shaft Power Meter kit, which will integrate with various other existing monitoring systems.

The initiative is aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, while improving the technical and operational efficiency of the ships, Oldendorff said.

"The addition of shaft power torque meters is an important part of being able to optimise our consumption and reduce our emissions," it added.

The system gives real time measurements of torque, power, thrust and dynamic torque.

Felix Lemke, junior projects manager at Oldendorff Carriers, said: “For us, the big advantage of the Datum Torque meter is its modular design. As the rotor belt’s size is adjustable, it can fit on any size of shaft, which gives the system great flexibility."
