Scorpio Bulkers has tied up a newly delivered kamsarmax on a period charter.
The New York-listed company said that it chartered out the 81,600-dwt SBI Zumba (built 2016) for $10,500 per day.
Scorpio will keep its vessel busy for five to seven months, while the earliest redelivery date has been set for April 2017.
This latest deal marks an improvement from the company’s latest kamsarmax charter, which was agreed on a daily rate of $9,000 in late November.
Scorpio president Robert Bugbee said at the time that charter rates at this level are above the company’s all-in cash-flow breakeven levels.
The rate secured by Scorpio for the SBI Zumba is lower than what LMZ Shipping will earn from the period charter of the 81,630-dwt LMZ Bianca (built 2013).
Aquavita has fixed LMZ’s ship for a daily rate of $13,000 for a period of five to seven months, according to data from the Baltic Exchange.
This article has been edited since publication to reflect the correct end date for the charter.
