Australia’s key commodity export facilities and the dry bulk sector face further disruption as two cyclones threaten the country almost simultaneously.

Tropical cyclone Trevor has already made landfall in the tip of northern Queensland forcing the closure of the ports of Weipa and Amrun.

Mining giant Rio Tinto is reported to have suspended operations at its Weipa bauxite operations due to the extreme weather.

Vessel operators have been advised to take “all necessary precautions” and follow the extreme weather plans for the ports, reported ship agency company GAC.

Over on the coast of Western Australia iron ore export facilities at Dampier and Port Hedland are preparing for the approaching Tropical cyclone Veronica.

“As per the latest forecast, Tropical Cyclone Veronica (19U) is currently located north of Port Hedland, and forecast to move in a West-Southwest direction and reach Category 4 intensity,” said GAC.

“Due to the direction of approach of the tropical cyclone, storm surges are likely to be experienced, which may be further intensified due to the spring tides.”

The storm is forecast to intensify as it moves closer to oil and gas operations on Saturday, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
