Roll-Royce has been selected to provide the design and ship equipment to two polar cruise vessels built for Hurtrigruten.
The £25m ($33m) contract signed between shipbuilder Kleven and Rolls-Royce follows the conversion of a letter of intent into a firm contract signed between Kleven and Hurtigruten.
Daniel Skjeldam, chief executive of Hurtrigruten, said: “To me, this contract is proof of the combined innovation powers of Norway’s maritime industry and the country’s growing tourism industry.”
Hurtigruten’s order includes two firm 18,000-gt units plus two options.
The vessels are believed to be worth $122m each.
Helge Gjerde, director of offshore and merchant solutions at Rolls-Royce, said: “Hurtigruten and Kleven have agreed to build state-of the art passenger vessels, and Rolls-Royce will provide some of the most innovative ship technology on the market today.”
