Nine months of positive performances has Matson confident they can close out the year strong.

The Hawaii-based shipowner posted $41.6m in profit in the third quarter and has the company confident its ocean transportation segment will beat last year's $127m operating revenue figure.

"We expect our businesses to continue to perform well in the fourth quarter, and, as a result, we are raising our outlook for ocean transportation and maintaining our outlook for logistics," said chief executive Matt Cox.

The company said container volume was down in Hawaii and China and flat in Guam, but "sizable rate premiums" carried its shipping performance.

On the logistics side, the company reported $2.6m operating revenue growth versus the third quarter last year.

Third quarter earnings per share bested the consensus estimate by six cents at $0.97.

In the first quarter, Matson more than doubled earnings year over year and had more good news in the second quarter with improved revenue in both shipping and logistics.
