The two 173,400-cbm ships, to be built at DSME, will serve the Freeport LNG project in Texas, a statement said.
“K-LNG is pleased to further develop their relationship with the BP group in the energy transportation sector and also to display its contribution to meet the increasing global demand for LNG transportation services,” the Japanese owner said.
Delivery of the ships is slated for 2018, with K-Line set to manage the duo.
TradeWinds reported last week that the partners had taken an option at DSME against a contract with BP, having placed the first newbuilding at the same yard last December against a charter with the energy major.
Contrary to some reports, the venture is not the Greek shipowner’s first participation in an LNG vessel. Chandris holds a 25% stake in the 145,000-cbm Methane Nile Eagle (built 2007).
But it is the company’s initial outing as a majority owner of LNG carriers.
