Golar LNG chief financial officer Karl Fredrik Staubo has been named as the company's new head.

The New York-listed gas carrier owner announced on Thursday that Staubo — who formerly led Golar LNG Partners until its takeover by New Fortress Energy — has been appointed chief executive.

He is joined on the leadership team by Eduardo Maranhao, who will serve as chief financial officer after holding the same position at one-time Golar spin-off candidate Hygo Energy Transition.

"The board is very pleased by the new management appointments," Golar chairman Tor Olav Troim said.

"Both individuals have deep knowledge about our company, they are good leaders, have strong work ethics, dynamic minds and have delivered solid value to the group over the last years.

"Together, with the rest of Golar’s management and board, we are convinced that the company has a strong management team ready to stream-line Golar’s existing operations and also explore the opportunities we see in the LNG market today."

Staubo served as chief executive of Golar LNG Partners since May 2020 until New Fortress Energy finalised its $5bn takeover of the company and Hygo last month. He had also been serving as chief financial officer of Golar LNG since September 2020.

He takes over from Iain Ross, who some credit with building Golar LNG from a pure shipping operator to a company with interests across the LNG supply chain.

Ross served as chief executive for three-and-a-half years.

Staubo had previous stints at Clarksons Platou Securities and Troim's private company, Magni Partners.

Maranhao had been with the Golar companies since 2015 in a variety of roles, including as Hygo finance chief. He previously served as chief executive of Centrais Eletricas de Sergipe and worked at Santander, Credit Agricole and Citibank, among others.

Prior to its purchase by New Fortress Energy, Hygo was set to be spun off in a $450m initial public offering.

The deal was scuttled after its chief executive — Eduardo Antonello — was caught up in the Brazilian bribery investigation known as Operation Car Wash for bribes allegedly paid before he began working with Golar.

Last autumn, the company investigated Antonello's conduct during his tenure there and cleared him of wrongdoing before he stepped down.
