CMA CGM is suing a Long Island waste-oil management company, alleging it caused a spill by improperly storing cargo.
The French containership giant filed a $1.3m lawsuit in Brooklyn federal court last week against Avani Environmental Group.
The case will run in parallel to legal proceedings already underway in the Commercial Court of Marseille over a May 2018 spill in Ningbo, China.
Burst container
In March that year, CMA CGM was hired to ship 25 containers carrying flexi tanks from Trinidad and Tobago to India, according to papers filed by lawyers led by Michael Fernandez of law firm Freehill, Hogan & Mahar.
Allegedly, one of the containers burst during shipment due to having too higher water content.
CMA CGM said on further inspection that other flexi tanks had similar issues. The spill cost $1.3m to clean up, it added, which was on top of costs incurred for the damage to containers, the disposal of the oil and attorneys' fees.
Avani did not immediately return a request for comment.
