An injured longshoreman is chasing Costamare in a $5m lawsuit.
Warren Rivers, an Alabama resident allegedly hurt while working onboard the 7,400-teu Maersk Kawasaki (built 1997), filed the lawsuit this week in federal court in Houston, Texas.
He alleges Costamare maintained an unseaworthy ship, leading to his injury from a “defective cargo container” during loading at the Port of Mobile, Alabama.
The Maersk Kawasaki is owned by Costamare through registered owner Montes Shipping Co and has management from affiliate Costamare Shipping Co. The lawsuit alleges that Costamare Shipping and Montes Shipping are simply legal alter egos of Costamare Inc, the Athens-based, New York-traded boxship owner.
Rivers claims that ignoring the companies’ relationship would allow them to evade full responsibility for his injuries, which were not disclosed in the lawsuit.
Costamare did not immediately return requests for comment.
