Eni is hinting at LNG potential off the coast of Ghana in West Africa after making a second significant gas discovery on the Offshore Cape Three Points block.
The Italian operator said the Gye Nyame 1 well, drilled 50 kilometres from the coast in 520 metres of water, “encountered significant thickness of gas and condensate sands”.
The well is 16 kilometres to the east of the earlier Sankofa discovery.
Eni said it has aleady begun talks with Ghanaian authorities about fast-tracking development of Sankofa to provide gas for the domestic market.
With this second discovery, though, the company now reckons there are potential “opportunities for exploiting the international market for liquefied gas through offshore facilities”.
