The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority has recommended conditional approval of Chevron’s A$25 billion (US$26.61 billion) Wheatstone LNG project.

The US supermajor is seeking an environmental permit for a 25 million tonnes per annum liquefaction facility, an associated domestic gas plant and offshore infrastructure.

Phase one will involve two trains with combined capacity of 8.9 million tpa.

Front-end engineering and design work is complete and a final investment decision is expected later this year.

“We are continuing to work with government to obtain timely project approvals,” said project general manager Brian Smith.

The Wheatstone partners are Chevron, Apache Energy, Kufpec and Shell.
