Malaysia’s Petronas reckons its floating liquefaction unit could yet be the first in the world, potentially starting up a year ahead of Shell’s bigger Prelude project.

Front-end engineering and design work is in progress, “so hopefully we will make a final investment decision towards the end of the year”, said Petronas chief executive Shamsul Azhar Abbas.

The 1.2 million tonnes per annum vessel will be deployed at an undisclosed Malaysian location on a 100%-owned Petronas field.

The state-run energy company is targeting its first commercial cargo by early 2015, said Abbas, acknowledging the schedule is ambitious.

¿ The Petronas LNG complex at Bintulu, Sarawak, produced a record 24.34 million tonnes in the 2010 financial year thanks to an improved operational performance.

About 60% of the volumes were exported to Japan, 18% to South Korea and 13% to Taiwan.
