Dof Group is partnering with Kongsberg Maritime and research firms SINTEF Ocean and NORCE to use 'big data' to make its operations greener and more efficient.

The partners plan to develop a "sophisticated" new decision support system (DSS) for operating Dof's offshore support vessels (OSVs), using 'internet of things' technologies.

Dof said the system will help it to reduce its fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and will simplify the company's operational complexity.

“Going ‘smart’ is integral to maintaining our position as the number-one OSV ship manager today and into the future, in a sustainable way," said Lars Christian Larsen, Dof’s senior project manager for energy management.

Smart sensors on board Dof vessels will stream "accurate" data to the cloud-based DSS, which will analyse and present the data to staff in a way that can be used to improve operational performance, said Eirik Mathiesen, Kongsberg Maritime’s director of energy products integration.

Outputs from the DSS will be provided to decision-makers across the organisation “from the vessel’s chief engineer to the chief operation officer based shore-side” in a format that Dof said would be "more accurate, timely, and easily consumable".

"Smart is not just deploying the right technologies. Developing our culture to focus even more on sustainable operations with minimal environmental impact will be as important as the technology we create with KONGSBERG, SINTEF Ocean and NORCE," said Larsen.

Innovation Norway is sponsoring and supporting the multi-year project, which was the largest-funded offshore vessel and environmental technology initiative greenlit by the government agency in 2018.

SINTEF is one of Europe’s largest independent research organisations. NORCE – also known as the Norwegian Research Centre — is Norway’s state research institute.
