Oslo-listed Seaway 7 has clinched its first new offshore wind contract since it was formed earlier this month.

The company was established through a merger between the renewables division of Kristian Siem's Subsea 7 and Arne Blystad's shipping company OHT.

OHT had said earlier this year it was close to clinching work for its offshore wind newbuildings from 2024.

Now its successor company has been selected as preferred provider of installation services by Orsted for two new projects in the German North Sea.

The newbuilding Vind1, under construction in China, will carry and install turbines at the Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 sites.

The projects are expected to be fully commissioned in 2024 and 2025. No contract values have been revealed.

Stuart Fitzgerald, Seaway 7 chief executive, said: "We are excited to have been awarded this contract, which is the first award for our newbuild wind turbine installation vessel.

'Validation'

"We see this award as a positive validation of the recent combination to form Seaway 7, as well as the Vind1 vessel capabilities, and we look forward to continue our working relationship with Orsted."

Vind1 is due from China Merchants Industry Holdings in 2023. Seaway 7 has 12 vessels, including heavy-lift tonnage.

BW Group-backed Cadeler, also listed in Oslo, has also been named as a preferred supplier by Orsted.

The company will use its 13,200-dwt wind turbine installation vessel Wind Osprey (built 2012) on the same wind farms.

When completed, the combined capacity of Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 will be more than 1 gigawatt.
