Capital World Investors has become one of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' (NCL) prime stakeholders, having taken ownership into the billion-dollar realm.

The Los Angeles-based investor holds more than 20.7 million shares of the cruise giant for a total investment of $1.12bn, according to an SEC filing.

Capital World's latest move in NCL places it among the company's top shareholders with a 9.4% interest.

The Capital Research and Management subsidiary bought 5.2 million NCL shares during last year's third quarter, upping its stake to about 7%, or15.6 million common units.

Other major shareholders in the company include Vanguard Group at 10% and T. Rowe Price Associates at 9.4%

Capital Research and Management is owned by Capital Group, which has an investment portfolio worth about $1.8tn.

Shares of NCL, which has a market cap of $11.5bn, declined 0.7% to $52.16 in early-morning trading.
