Growing Norwegian containership freight rate benchmarking group Xeneta has recruited high-profile shipping analyst Peter Sand.

Sand is swapping his chief shipping analyst role at Denmark-based shipowners' organisation Bimco to become chief analyst at Xeneta. He will start on 1 November.

The appointment comes hot on the heels of the market analytics platform and container shipping index's successful closing of a $28.5m fundraising round.

Xeneta chief executive Patrik Berglund said his company is excited to welcome a "seasoned professional" with extensive knowledge of and a successful track record in shipping and logistics.

"Peter is a staple in the market who consistently gives a fresh and global outlook into the ins and outs of the ever-changing container shipping world," he added.

Berglund said Sand's "extremely well thought-through market commentaries and expert insights" will further position Xeneta data as the go-to-source for accurate container rate information.

10 years of service

Sand joins Xeneta after more than a decade at Bimco, where he covered all the major shipping sectors.

He was previously a senior analyst at Danish bulker and tanker owner Norden.

Sand is a regular interviewee on global news networks such as CNN, the BBC, CNBC and Bloomberg.

He holds a master's degree in economics from the University of Copenhagen.

The new recruit joins as the containership markets are thriving.

Sand said: "This is an exciting time to be joining a pioneer-leading company and I am fortunate to become a part of the Xeneta team at a time where the company is experiencing growth and momentum."

Soothing the 'pain'

He added that Xeneta's data insights address industry "pain points".

"I am eager to leverage my shipping and logistics expertise to help navigate such an unprecedented time that our sector is facing," Sand said.

As chief analyst, he will look to deliver expert commentary for clients like Volvo, John Deere, Amer Sports, Rockwell Automation, Volvo and CEVA Logistics.

Xeneta's data is comprised of more than 280m contracted container and air freight rates and covers more than 60,000 global trade routes.

Bimco deputy secretary general Michael Lund told TradeWinds: "Peter has been with us since 2009, and we wish him all the best in his new position."

"We are now in the process of finding a replacement," he added.
