The attack involving the 6,500-dwt Ocean Energy (built 2011) is the fifth such incident in the region since the start of 2015.

The Singapore-flagged tanker was boarded at about 21:30 local time on 2 May by eight perpetrators armed with guns.

It was ordered to anchor off Malaysia’s Port Dickson in position 02° 19.3 .64’ N, 101° 40.4’ E where a barge came alongside.

Then whilst the master and crew were locked away, over 2,000t of gas oil was allegedly discharged into the barge.

The robbers subsequently left the vessel at about 04:30 on Sunday, after damaging the ship’s communication equipment and took away the ship’s Iridium phone, the crew’s cash and mobile phones.

The vessel only managed to contact the company security officer (CSO) at about 05:53 on Sunday to report the incident. The ship returned to its home port and all crew were reported safe and uninjured.

Details of this latest incident came in an alert from the Singapore-based Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre.
