Wren Thomas was in charge of the 3,286-dwt C-Retriever (built 1999) when it was hijacked on 23 October 2013.

He was held captive for 18 days in a Nigerian swamp.

Thomas claims to have suffered a loss of earnings and ability to support his family following his experiences.

As a result, the compensation to be claimed by his side would be “millions of dollars”, in case that his injuries are proven during a jury trial.

According to a lawsuit filed in a Texas District Court, Thomas was treated like an animal and developed the realistic expectation of his imminent death during his ordeal.

The captain blames the two companies for serious and permanent disorders that he claims will continue in the future.

In an e-mail response to TradeWinds’ enquiries, Chevron said it would be premature to comment on the captain’s lawsuit.

A trial date has yet to be set.
