Og Amazu, of Amazoil Nigeria, said Glencore promised him $10m for his assistance in the case of the 315-dwt stand-by vessel Myre Seadiver (built 1965).

He says in a complaint filed in the UK high court that he arranged meetings with “high-ranking” Nigerian security officials at the behest of Glencore, Bloomberg reported.

Glencore said in a statement: “The allegations are baseless and we will vigorously defend the case against us.”

A Nigerian court acquitted the seafarers in 2013, a year after the ship was seized when assault rifles and bullets were found on board.

Moscow security firm Moran Security Group, which owned the vessel, said the weapons were designed to provide protection against pirates.
