It will become the 20th country to join the anti-piracy group tomorrow.

Rear Admiral Paul Thomas, the US Coast Guard’s assistant commandant for prevention policy, will be named a governor of ReCAAP’s council.

“The United States’ acceptance as part of the ReCAAP governing council continues our administration’s move to deepen our diplomatic, security and people-to-people ties with key Asian multilateral organisations,” said Thomas.

ReCAAP was formed in 2006 as a government-to-government agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation to combat piracy.

The Singapore organisation serves as an information exchange for member countries to share data on piracy incidents. It also supports capacity building efforts among the contracting countries.
