The head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has contracted coronavirus.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo told US media on Monday that executive director Rick Cotton is self-isolating and working from home.

His senior team will be tested and placed in quarantine as well, Cuomo added.

Lindsay Kryzak, a Port Authority spokesperson, told CNN that Cotton is showing no symptoms yet.

Any staff who had close contact with him in recent days are already working from home.

"We've been taking stock of the situation for weeks in preparation for something like this happening," Kryzak said.

"Like many agencies and private companies, the Port Authority has work from home policies and contingency plans that allow the agency to function fully with certain staff working from outside the office."

The authority oversees ports, airports, ferries and bus travel in the two states.

Cuomo said it was possible that Cotton contracted the Covid-19 strain of coronavirus while working in and around airports.

These include John F Kennedy International and LaGuardia in New York City, as well as Newark Liberty International and Teterboro airports in New Jersey, and Stewart International Airport in Orange County, New York.

Business breakfast

Cotton had attended a transport industry breakfast last week.

Metropolitan Transit Authority CEO and chairman Pat Foye was quoted as saying he did not speak to Cotton or shake his hand at the event.

"The others here who [were] at that breakfast are talking to medical staff here and will act accordingly," said Foye.

New York state has 142 confirmed cases, up from a previous tally of 106.

Of these, 24 are under mandatory quarantine and more than 2,000 people are in voluntary isolation in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.
