An Active Shipping-owned LR2 has been chased by pirates in the Indian Ocean but evaded capture, TradeWinds has learnt.

The incident aboard the 115,000-dwt Pacific Sky (built 2007) took place 180nm southwest of Porbander in India in position 20° 13.9' N, 66° 51.1' E.

The incident took place late last week, but has only just been reported by the Singapore-based Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre.

“While sailing, an unknown number of perpetrators on board four skiffs chased after the ship and attempted to board, but failed,” ReCAAP said.

The ship’s master is said to have raised the distress alert via VHF Channel 16 and warned all shipping in the vicinity.

He then triggered the horn to chase away the suspicious craft, increased the speed of the ship and informed the UKMTO and alerted the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

Upon receipt of the information, the ICG is reported to have established contact with the ship and conducted an investigation of the incident.
