The US Coast Guard (USCG) has been involved in a near 360 mile trip to rescue an injured sailor in the Pacific Ocean aboard a Gearbulk vessel.
The unnamed 38-year-old man was airlifted from the 54,300-dwt Tawa Arrow (built 2008) on Saturday as the ship steamed 174 miles off the Columbia River.
The USCG had received a request for assistance at 14:53 local time from the shipping agent for the Panama-flagged vessel.
The agent reported the crewman had suffered burns on his legs and arms from a boiler steam incident, and had received antibiotics and pain medication.
At the time of the request, the semi-open jib crane vessel was over 200 miles offshore and en route to Columbia River.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew safely hoisted the injured crewman and transported him ashore, where he was transferred to a hospital in Portland.
