DNV GL is putting an end to the paper chase as it rolls out electronic certificates across its entire fleet.
The classification society said the widespread use of electronic class and statutory certificates will result in efficiency gains for shipowners, charterers and regulators.
DNV GL has been working on pilot digital projects for the past few years and around 50 flag states have granted the class society permission to issue certificates on their behalf.
Knut Orbeck-Nilssen, chief executive of DNV GL-Maritime, said: “The roll-out of electronic certificates is a significant step forward in our pathway towards modernising classification.
“Electronic certificates will smooth our customers’ interaction with class, allow stakeholders across industry to capture value for digitalisation and give us a platform for future improvements.”
One of the companies that took part in DNV GL’s pilot projects was Teekay Offshore.
Its fleet manager Morten Nygaard said: “It is our intention to benefit from the new regime within the shortest possible time frames.”
With the new certificates, shipowners can choose to share access with their charterers, ports and insurers.
DNV GL said this will help shipping companies cut down administrative burdens and save processing time.
