An Evergreen Marine containership has emerged as the vessel targeted by pirates off the coast of Somalia over the weekend.
The European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR)\ has named the ship as the Panama-flagged 4,211-teu Ever Dynamic (built 1998).
The ship was said to be en-route from Colombo in Sri Lanka to Mombassa in Kenya when the incident took place.
The attacks were said to have taken place over a 24 hour period between the 17 and 18 November in the Southern Somali Basin, in an area known for piracy incidents.
“During the incidents a number of rocket propelled grenades were fired against the container ship,” EU NAVFOR said in an earlier statement.
“However, adherence to BMP4, the presence of a security team on one of the vessels, and good seamanship avoided any damage or injuries, and all crew and vessels are now safe.”
EU NAVFOR naval units later detained six individuals suspected of being responsible for the attack plus a mother ship and a skiff.
A legal process is now underway for the suspected pirates to be transferred to the appropriate authority for prosecution.
