Inmarsat has launched its cyber security software system to protect Internet-connected ships at sea.
Fleet Secure, developed by Singtel subsidiary Trustwave, will be offered as an option with Inmarsat’s high broadband availability Fleet Xpress system.
“Fleet Secure is the maritime industry’s first and only fully-managed service to detect vulnerabilities, respond to threats and protect ships from widespread cyberattack,” Inmarsat claimed.
Peter Broadhurst, Senior Vice President Safety and Security, Inmarsat Maritime says the system does not provide physical protection but will stop the spread of malware if any computer on a network is infected.
Three band levels are available – Gold giving full real time alerts and analysis of any attack or network issue.
Pricing has not yet been made public, but Inmarsat has previously said it will not be an expensive add-on. “A small amount per month can save a huge amount when a problem occurs,” said Broadhurst.
Some 39% of shipping companies in a survey by FutureNautics report experiencing an onboard cyber attack in the last 12 months.
