The cause of the leak has been identified and the outflow stopped according to a statement issued on behalf of Athens based Alassia Newships
Although Alassia must know the nature of the problem that caused the spill as the outflow has been identified details of the fault have not so far been released.
The 81,000-dwt Marathassa delivered by shipbuilder Japan Marine United less than a month ago is estimated to have spilt about 2.5 metric tonnes of bunker fuel.
The Marathassa, which was on its maiden voyage remains at anchor and surrounded by booms in English Bay while a clean-up is undertaken.
“The current effort and focus are on clean up and the vessel and contracted response professionals are working with local authorities to clean up the sheen,” said a statement from the owner.
“When the clean-up is completed, to the satisfaction of local authorities, all possible causes of the incident will be investigated, particularly given that this was the vessel's first voyage,” said a company spokesman.
