Newly appointed IACS chairman Knut Orbeck-Nilssen wants to bring the association up to speed with the latest developments in technology as well as raising standards for members.
DNV GL’s head of marine has tasked the classification society association with identifying and removing elements that are hindering the development of new technologies like automation.
He also wants to outline procedures that will allow classification societies to issue electronic certificates.
New surveying methods, including the use of drones and basing surveys and maintenance on condition, rather than a calendar basis, are also under review.
New digital processes also need to be taken into consideration in terms of the use of sensors, data quality and cyber security Orbeck-Nilssen believes.
“Digitalisation is changing not only the way the shipping business is being conducted, but the systems themselves and the way they act together,” he said.
“Because of this, class needs to be adaptable and flexible in our delivery and thinking. IACS members should be enabled to provide the services that our stakeholders require in the digital age, as these are essential for competitive and safe operations,” he said.
Orbeck-Nilssen said he will also be tightening the IACS membership criteria to raise quality standards. The new standards are expected to be in place by 2018 and will apply to both existing and new membership applications.
“We must uphold the high standards we have set, but make sure we are providing the industry needs to respond to the challenges of today and of the future,” he said.
