The Paris MOU has banned a veteran cargoship for a year after it failed checks under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).

The port state organisation said the 1,900-dwt Dana 1 (built 1973) was detained in Salerno, Italy, in March due to deficiencies relating to wages, as well as a damaged cold room and a defective sleeping room.

It was held for 18 days with 10 deficiencies, which also included problems with emergency lighting and firefighting equipment.

This was its third detention in three years and its second ban, meaning the term was 12 months.

The vessel is listed as operated by Frim of St Petersburg.

Paris MOU also banned the 1,800-dwt cargoship Agios Rafail (built 1971) for three months.

It had 20 deficiencies and was detained for a week in Pula, Croatia, in April.

The crew was unfit for duty under the work/rest rules of the MLC, there was inoperative oil filtering equipment and the hull was holed, impairing seaworthiness.

The ship is listed as managed by Thetis Shipholding of Greece.

Both vessels are flagged in Moldova, which is black on the current Paris MOU list.
