A Tallink ro-pax demolished a lighthouse because sea water had entered its fuel pipes, an accident report has found.
The 15,400-gt Regal Star (built 1999) allided with the Remmargrund structure on 30 October off Kapellskar, Sweden, on 30 October.
The Estonian Safety Investigation Bureau (ESIB) said in a report that the ship had left Kapellskar on time, according to BNS.
But the ship's auxiliary engines later stopped and the electricity supply failed, with the main engines also soon grinding to a halt.
The vessel then started to drift in a storm, and the dropping of its anchor failed to stop this.
After the crash, it returned to port under its own power.
The report said a large amount of water had entered its diesel fuel tank.
Corrosion had caused holes to appear in the ventilation pipe, which passed through a ballast water tank filled with seawater.
The pipe was replaced after the accident.
None of the 38 people on board was injured and no pollution was reported.
The underwater foundation of the lighthouse remained stable, but the tower and other parts above the water needed to be replaced.
