A BW Group chemical and products tanker has been targeted by armed robbers while anchored in the South China Sea.

The incident aboard the 50,000-dwt BW Myna (built 2015) took place on Saturday at around 05:30 in position in position 1° 27.2' N, 104° 38.4' E.

While at anchor, the ship’s duty officer discovered a hook with a rope secured on the ship’s railing at the starboard quarter and a small boat hiding beneath the curvature.

When he unhooked the rope and the boat was drifting away, five perpetrators armed with long knives shouted at him from the poop deck.

The emergency alarm was raised and an announcement was made through the PA system. The ship’s master then reported incident to the Singapore Navy.

The ship’s crew were mustered in the mess room and a search on the ship was conducted. No member of the crew was injured and nothing was stolen.

Details of the incident come from the Singapore-based Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre.

On Tuesday TradeWinds reported that the Silver Star Ship Management-operated aframax GP T2 (built 1997) was attacked in the early hours of Monday off Indonesia.

The 107,000-dwt ship was six miles north-east of Batam Island, Indonesia, in the Singapore Strait when the incident happened.

Five perpetrators armed with knives boarded the ship while it was underway eastbound and tied up the duty oiler in the engine room, before stealing engine spare parts.
