Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries has appointed an Australian safety officer following a fatal crane crash in May.

Peter Hayward has been brought in as an executive director to head its newly established safety management division.

The Australian, 57, started out at ExxonMobil in 1982 as a health and safety engineer, the Korea Times reported.

He has continued to work with oil majors and engineering companies.

“We have high expectations for Hayward who will greatly help improve our occupational safety,” a company official said.

“We will continue to do our best to make our shipyards accident-free and bolster workers’ wellbeing.”

The yard has been working with specialist institution Environmental Resources Management (ERM) to address the safety issue.

ERM will continue consultancy work throughout most of 2018.

Samsung is also developing a system to prevent crane collapses.

This is based on real-time monitoring of their positions. A pilot will be ready in December.

In addition, cameras will be installed on 108 cranes.

The May collapse led to a government order to temporarily halt work at the Geoje yard.

Six people died and 25 were injured.
