A search for a missing Maersk Line crewman has ended without success.
The Danish owner said it reported a seafarer overboard from its 2,902-teu Maersk Patras (built 1998) on Sunday in the Saint Lawrence River in Canada.
The missing man is the second officer, a Sri Lankan national.
The vessel was north-east of the junction with Saguenay River at the time.
Several ships and aircraft joined in the search.
“It is with regret we have received the news that the search and rescue operation was unsuccessful and we must conclude that we have lost our colleague," said COO of AP Moller-Maersk, Soren Toft.
"It is a tragic situation for the family and we have offered them our full support. My deepest condolences and thoughts go to them.”
Maersk is in contact with the relatives as well as the crew members of Maersk Patras, who will receive crisis counselling.
The company will cooperate fully with the authorities in the investigation.
