The Turkish navy has come to the aid of an injured Greek seafarer aboard a John Angelicoussis tanker in the Gulf of Aden.
Vazoios Marcos, working aboard the 159,000-dwt tanker Aegean Angel (built 2004), suffered a loss to one of his fingers and was in a critical condition.
The Turkish warship TCG Giresun, under the command of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, was first to respond to the incident.
It initially sent a medical team using its SH-70 Seahawk helicopter to render assistance to the suezmax tanker which was off the coast of Salalah, Oman.
Once the helicopter arrived, the injured sailor was hoisted aboard the doctor of the medical team carefully examined and the patient was transferred to the naval vessel.
Upon coordination with the Omani authorities, the TCG Giresun proceeded with best speed to Salalah Harbour where a medical team received the injured sailor and took him to hospital where he underwent surgery.
After the surgery, crew memebrs from TCG Giresun visited the injuried sailor and gave warm wishes for a speedy recovery.
Commenting on the successful medical evacuation, Rear Admiral Emre Sezenler, Commander Combined Task Force 151, said: “After two SOLAS operations conducted recently by another CTF 151 warship, we now have witnessed another example of the solidarity that bonds all seafarers.
“I appreciate the efforts by the crew of TCG Giresun for their great contribution to this successful operation. As in the past, and today, CTF 151 will continue to support mariners in the future.”
