A KMTC feeder containership has suffered a major explosion and fire during a call at Thailand’s Laem Chabang terminal.
The incident aboard the 1,600-teu KMTC Hong Kong (built 1998) occurred on Saturday with reports of injuries to 25 people and more than 130 people taken to hospital.
Video footage of the incident shows containers being blown into the air and falling into the sea alongside the Korean-flagged vessel.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the blaze broke out in containers containing the chemical calcium hypochlorite, reported Reuters quoting port officials.
Earlier this year, insurer TT Club claimed that a major container ship fire at sea occurs on average every 60 days, with several such incidents already in 2019.
