The 180,000-gt giants to be built at Turku, Finland, add to a sister pair placed by Carnival for its AIDA Cruises arm at Meyer Werft in June.

Arnold Donald, chief executive of Carnival, said: “Above all, these strategic investments are designed to exceed the vacation needs of our guests.

“But it is also important to note that these next-generation ships are an important part of our measured growth strategy, which includes replacing less efficient ships with newer, larger and more efficient vessels over a very specific period of time."

Turku will roll out the latest newbuildings in 2019 and 2020.

The two vessels placed by AIDA and today’s additions are the first cruise vessels ordered which will be powered at sea by LNG, Carnival says.

The owner explains the quartet is part of a wider agreement it has with Meyer Werft and Fincantieri for nine new vessels between 2019 and 2022.
