A run of new orders has prompted a recruitment drive at Damen's Mangalia shipyard in Romania.

Damen acquired a stake in the shipbuilder from DSME of Korea last year and operates it with the other major shareholder, the Romanian state.

The economy ministry said that new contracts will allow the yard to operate at full capacity this summer, according to SeeNews.

It has won a firm cruiseship contract from Atle Brynestad's SeaDream Yacht Club, plus an option, as well as ferry and offshore vessel deals.

Damen intends to build the workforce to 2,500 from 1,700 by the end of this year.

"The Mangalia site offers opportunities not only for the Damen group, but also for shipbuilding personnel and for the Romanian maritime industry as a whole," Damen Mangalia Shipyard managing director Chris Groninger said.

Economy minister Niculae Badalau added: "The partnership between Romania and Damen Group brings benefits for both sides, continuing a long shipbuilding tradition in the Black Sea.

"At the same time, new jobs, opportunities and prospects for future investors and suppliers are created."

SeaDream Yacht Club is paying more than NOK 1.5bn ($176m) for the first ship in the series, a breakthrough into the cruise sector for Damen, it has been reported.

The first 155-metre ship, called Mega Yacht, will be delivered in September 2021, from its newly acquired Damen Mangalia yard.

SeaDream has two small vessels built in 1984 and 1985.
