Former Rederi AB Gotland CEO Jan-Eric Nilsson has landed a top job with Sweden's army.

The company said the executive had been offered and accepted a position with the leadership staff at the Armed Forces headquarters.

The marine engineer has been assigned "the degree of command," it added.

“The gradual deterioration of the security policy situation...makes the assignment both urgent and prioritised," Nilsson said.

"During the same period, society has changed, which places new demands on a functioning total defence where the business sector has an increasingly important role.

"I am honoured to have been asked and hope that my 44 years as a professional and reserve officer and 31 years in parallel in the business sector will come in handy."

Nilsson has withdrawn from any role at the tanker and ro-pax owner as a result.

Gotland chairperson Ann-Marie Astrom said: “Jan-Eric has made valuable and important contributions within Rederi AB Gotland...for many years in roles as CEO, chairman of the board and board member.

"The work on reconstruction of the total defence is important, not least for Gotland."
