Denmark's Monjasa has expanded its Middle East bunkering activities in a deal with RAK Ports of the United Arab Emirates.

The group said it will provide marine fuel services across all four terminals in the Ras Al Khaimah company's network.

A Monjasa spokesman told TradeWinds the new partnership was agreed to "sustain efficient shipping operations".

"As part of the agreement, Monjasa will provide all services related to refuelling operations and use its own fleet of tankers to supply VLSFO, HSFO and marine gasoil," he added.

The spokesman said Monjasa is the only marine fuels supplier servicing the RAK Ports, but there is no exclusivity agreement.

Monjasa has been operating in the Middle East since 2006, with an office in Dubai employing 75 staff.

RAK Ports has recently invested $250m in infrastructure at its bases next to the Strait of Hormuz.

RAK chief executive Roger Clasquin said: "Due to our unique, strategic gateway position at the central point of the Gulf states and as the closest ports to the Strait of Hormuz, RAK Ports are ideally located to become a significant bunkering hub."

The ports group handles close to 2,000 vessels per year.

Destination of choice?

"This key agreement forms a significant offering in RAK Ports expanding shipping support infrastructure and reputation as the destination of choice for vessels in the region," the RAK said.

Monjasa has four bunker tankers in the Middle East region, ranging between 4,000 dwt and 10,000 dwt. It supplied 700,000 tonnes of marine fuels there in 2020.
