Houthi rebels in Yemen have detained 10 ships, according to the country's government.

The claim was made by Saudi Arabian state TV channel Al-Ekhbariya.

Tankers and cargoships are among those held at the port of Hodeidah, the report said.

Yemen's minister of local administration Abdul-Sareq Fatah said the militia had prevented ships from unloading their cargoes, which included food.

He called on the United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Lisa Grande, to intervene.

Fatah listed a tanker that arrived on 28 September as one of the vessels involved.

It is carrying 10,955 tonnes of diesel and 9,025 tonnes of petrol.

Another ship is said to be carrying 5,700 tonnes of flour and sugar, having arrived on 3 October, according to a statement issued by Yemen's official news agency.

The Houthi militia has not commented.

In April, it was claimed by Saudi authorities that 19 vessels were detained by Houthi forces.

But shipowners said operations had continued as normal.
