Major class society DNV has confirmed its ShipManager software has had to be shut down after being the victim of a cyber-attack on the evening of Saturday 7 January.
The Norway-based group is the second classification society to have to shut down some IT servers in response to a cyber attack in the last couple of years.
All users can still use the onboard, offline functionalities of the ShipManager software, DNV said.
It added that at this point in time, there are no indications that any other software or data is affected.
DNV said its experts are working closely with global IT security partners to investigate the incident and to put in place a technical recovery plan.
The group said it will ensure operations are online as soon as possible.
Bureau Veritas was the subject of a cyber attack in late 2021. About 80% of its computing systems were back online two weeks after the attack on the French classification society which led it to take servers and data offline.
The ShipManager solution is sold from DNV AS, and DNV is in dialogue with the Norwegian police about the incident.
Affected customers have been informed of a 24/7 support hotline.
“We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience this incident may have caused,” DNV said.
DNV acquired Amsterdam-based industrial cyber security specialist company Applied Risk in November 2021 as it moved to scale up its cyber security business.
