New York start-up Nautilus Labs and TotalEnergies have expanded their partnership on slashing emissions from the French company's chartered-in LNG carrier fleet.

The partnership sees TotalEnergies use Nautilus Labs' sensor data and machine learning models in an effort to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

"As a charterer, your systems and partners have to be flexible, smart, being able to adapt to new requirements and regulations," said TotalEnergies vice president of LNG shipping Jerome Cousin.

"In Nautilus we found a solution that can work with any owner and seamlessly integrates all data sets, helping us optimise performance and decisions made during voyages, to ultimately cut greenhouse gas emissions."

The announcement comes as TotalEnergies has looked to grow its LNG fleet, with Cousin telling TradeWinds in July that the company intends to have 20 vessels on long-term charter totalling 50m tonnes by 2025.

Cousin said the company prefers newbuildings, but was open to vessels already in the market.

Then, the company had chartered in two Sovcomflot newbuildings, followed up with a year-long charter for the 155,000-cbm GasLog Seattle (built 2013).

TotalEnergies said the partnership will help the company towards its goal of being carbon neutral in its operations worldwide by 2050.

Matt Heider, Nautilus Labs chief executive, said the company's artificial intelligence system provides actionable insights for shipowners to push for maximum efficiency and toward decarbonisation.

The company's system provides shipowners with digital tools to optimise voyages, using data provided by the owner and its own data sets.

Nautilus already has partnerships with Oceanking to expand access to the platform in Greece and Cyprus, Datum Electronics on vessel digitisation and Kongsberg Digital to integrate its platform into the Kognifai system.

"We’re excited to work with TotalEnergies, supporting their path towards carbon neutrality," Heider said.

"We often see siloed data and stakeholders in the industry, resulting in fuel waste and excess emissions. Nautilus Platform supports TotalEnergies in breaking down those barriers and embracing open collaboration."
