Alongside 25 partners from the Norwegian maritime industry, the classification society will experiment with new ideas on cargo ferries, shuttle tankers and hybrid ocean farming vessels.
Narve Mjos, programme director of DNV GL, said: “When we launched the Green Coastal Shipping Programme, we said we wanted to make Norway a world showcase for green coastal shipping.
“With these five pioneering pilot projects we are well on our way.”
The first of these five projects will see a plug-in hybrid LNG/battery propulsion system power a short-sea boxship.
Teekay Tankers will take part by investigating technical solutions for using batteries and volatile organic compounds in a shuttle tanker.
Ports are also included in DNV GL’s agenda as the class society plans to develop a low energy consumption port with a minimal carbon footprint.
Risavika harbour in Stavanger will take the lead in this green port project.
