The tie-up with New York-listed Accenture, the world’s largest consulting firm, is part of an effort by HHI to expand its business into the services sector.
“Through this collaboration with Accenture, our ambition is to lead innovation in ship operations, shipping and the port logistics sector,” said Moon-kyoon Yoon, chief operating officer of the shipbuilding division at HHI.
The smart ship technologies will help owners gather data on location, weather, ocean currents, onboard ship equipment and cargo status, Accenture and HHI said.
They will be able to use the real-time information to make data-driven decisions that will improve efficiency, bringing operational costs savings, the companies claim.
With the combination of the South Korean shipbuilding giant’s on-ship platforms with the Accenture Connected Platforms as a Service (CPaaS), HHI’s ship operator customers will be able to monitor all connected devices remotely, the outfits say.
Classification societies have been extolling the potential benefits of bringing so-called big data technologies, wedding shipwide sensors with real-time analytics.
But so far, few shipowners have even experimented with the technology.
